Ham. Co. Commission Chairman says he won’t let confederate statue come down

A confederate statue at the Hamilton County Courthouse still caught in the cross hairs.

That’s despite confusion between the local NAACP and leaders at the state and national level.

More than 100 years ago, a brigade led by Lt. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart’s stormed through the Chickamauga Battlefield.

“At the end of the day, Stuart will reorient across the road here and attack northward, up the road,” said Jim Ogden.

Jim Ogden is Chief historian at the Chickamauga Chattanooga National Military Park.

A place Ogden says, Lt. Gen Stewart helped think up, alongside two other men.

“He doesn’t really have any ties to Chattanooga, except, his civil war service and his role in creating this national military park,” said Ogden.

But, going back a month, both the local and state NAACP have said they want Hamilton County commissioners to remove Stewart’s likeness.

“We find it offensive to be reminded constantly of the atrocities that they represent,” said Quenston A. Coleman back in June.
