Please, no Confederate flags anymore
Orlando Sentinel – Lake County’s Republican Party last month was quietly holding a Flag Day event to honor the stars and stripes when a guy proudly waving a Confederate flag jumped into the frame, literally.
There he was, looking a bit like a tattered Confederate soldier himself with his scruffy beard, photographed with children and retirees, including one lady in a snazzy red dress and matching straw hat. The pictures showed up on a variety of Facebook pages.
This is wrong for one simple reason: The Confederate flag can’t be washed clean. There is no redeeming this symbol of enslavement, just like there’s no way to become a virgin again, no putting the bullet that killed back in a gun.
To their great shame, local Republican Party officials did nothing.
Lake Chairman Walter Price said that the party held the event to honor the American flag and that the man with the Confederate flag showed up toward the end.
The party did not “invite this person or sanction the Confederate flag,” Price wrote in an email.
So why didn’t a party official politely tell him that it wasn’t appropriate to display this symbol of oppression and send the little hater home?
“No one in charge saw him right away,” Price wrote…
