Three years ago, two 12-year-old girls tried to stab to death one of their friends as a tribute to a fictional horror character “Slender man.” Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser, who are now 15, tried to kill Payton Leutner by luring her into the woods and stabbing her 19 times. Weier has pleaded guilty to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide, but her attorneys are trying to establish that she had a mental illness at the time and wasn’t responsible for her actions.
A pathologist testified Wednesday that both girls suffered from a “shared delusion” that left them unable to discern that their conduct was against the law. If at least 10 jurors believe that tripe, both could go free for their crimes.
So, basically, the girls may get off because of an insanity plea. Melissa Westendorf was appointed by a judge to evaluate Weier after her defense claim, and what she said yesterday supports the liberal idea that the girls shouldn’t be held responsible.
